Turn overlooked data into decisions that move the business.
I'm Mitchel Roling. I work as a fractional extension of small and medium businesses and nonprofits. I find the insight hiding in your data, turn it into recommendations you can act on, and build the systems that put those decisions to work. I use AI and automation where they earn their place, never for the hype. Careful, measured, and focused on results that hold up.
What I do
Where I can help
Usually more than one at a time. The value compounds when analysis, AI, systems, and operations move together.
Data Analysis and Recommendations
Many organizations are data-rich but insight-poor. I dig into your data to find what is driving results and what is holding them back, then turn it into clear, prioritized recommendations leadership can act on. Findings mapped to decisions, not a report that gathers dust.
Systems That Fit How You Work
A recommendation only helps if it sticks, so I build it into the dashboards and systems your teams already use, across CRM, marketing automation, sales and marketing tracking, and product behavior. Having personally set up and administered over 230 platforms (I stopped counting a while ago), I adapt to whatever you already run rather than forcing a rip-and-replace, and streamline it to cut cost and strip out bloat.
AI, Applied
I put AI to work in three places: automating repetitive processes, augmenting the products you offer, and enriching the data you depend on. Practical use of the latest models, built to be maintained rather than demoed once.
Data and Research Products
I build the products themselves: streamlined data processing and visualization, plus prototypes and proofs of concept that turn an idea into something you can put in front of people.
About
Consulting with a personal touch
For 17 years I have worked as a data and business process architect, helping organizations get more from their data and build the systems to act on it. I find what actually matters, make clear recommendations, and then do the part most consultants skip: I operationalize them into a system your teams will actually use, lightweight and easy to maintain, because a process is only useful if it matches a workflow.
Before consulting, I spent over a decade inside a growing research company, rising to lead its business intelligence and sales and marketing operations and advising the C-suite. That taught me to be a realist. I put the latest AI and automation to work where they earn their place, never for the hype, and I stay honest about what will and will not move the needle.
I work best as a fractional extension of established small and medium businesses and nonprofits: deep expertise, part time, high impact with minimal oversight, in a fraction of the time most others take. You work with me directly, from first conversation to working system. The person who scopes it is the person who builds it.
Representative work
The kind of work I do
Every engagement is different, but the shape is familiar. A few representative examples, with the details kept general.
B2B software company
Fractional, multi-year
One source of truth for finance, sales, and marketing
I unified data from across scattered systems into a single source of truth, then built the dashboards each team actually needed. The CFO got granular reporting on exactly how revenue came in and was recognized. Sales got rep-level reports that showed how reps were gaining traction, plus tools managers could use to coach their teams and judge success by more than a generic pipeline. Marketing got a detailed multi-touch attribution model that split revenue across every trackable channel. I ran it as an ongoing part-time resource for years, until the company was ready to build the function in-house.
Education nonprofit
Fractional, still going
Hired to replace one role, trusted with more
I came in part-time to take over data analysis after their analyst left. Dashboards, ad hoc pulls, the reports that keep the mission moving. When the ETL developer left too, I picked up the data pipeline work that mattered most. Now I provide data and advice to nearly every team in the organization, still fractional, adapting as the needs change.
Data product company
CRM cleanup to full product
From tidying up systems to building the product they run on
It started with cleaning up their CRM and marketing systems. As that earned trust the scope kept growing, until I had built the product their business now runs on: the back-end content system and the customer-facing data application their users log into every day.
